Magnamed is a prime example of the importance of investing in science and technology in Brazil. When we invested in the company in 2009, it consisted of just three technicians working at a bench at CIETEC. In 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Brazil could rely on Magnamed's family of lung ventilators. With the sale of 6,500 ventilators to the Federal Government, the company achieved a turnover of R$343 million that year.
Antera was founded in 2005 to fill the gap in Brazilian seed capital. "Between 2000 and 2004, when I led ABCR (now ABVCAP), private equity and late-stage VC investments were well-established, but there was a lack of capital for early-stage companies. In 2007, with CRIATEC, we were able to put our thesis into practice, and the results have been significant. The concept of startups is now nationally recognized," says Robert Binder, CEO of Antera.
